Tips & Tricks Tuesday | What Should I Bring to My Portrait Session?

  1. Outfits on hangers that are ironed and ready to be worn
Iron and hang up your outfits to save time at your session by making sure your outfits are perfect and ready to go. Also, if you or your mother is anything like my mom, she does NOT like wrinkled clothes (especially in photographs)! …Sorry, Mom!
  2. Accessories
Accessories are like the cherry on top of an ice cream sundae because they really finish and complete the outfit. Accessories are also a great way to change your look quickly and allow for a variety of images without having to completely change clothes. Necklaces, hats, earrings, bracelets, rings, and scarfs are small ways to make your photographs give a big impression! Your photographer might think one accessory might photograph better than the other, so by having a variety of items with you allows for more versatility.
  3. Shoes! Shoes! And MORE SHOES!
Shoes often get overlooked when planning for a senior session. By bringing multiple options, you will be able to change them during your session if you do not like how they’re photographing. Also, bring a pair of COMFORTABLE SHOES just in case you have to walk a long way to get to your shooting location.
  4. Hair Products
Your hair might lose a little life in between outfit changes or if it is a windy or humid day. Bring hair spray, bobby pins and a brush to make sure you’re ready just in case you want to freshen up or change your hair style at any point during the session.
  5. Makeup
Here in Texas, we all know the Texas heat can be a pain in the rear. Make sure to bring your makeup bag with powder and blush just in case you get sweaty during your session and need to freshen up your makeup.
  6. Towel or Tissues
Again, for all of you Texans, be prepared for a hot day by bringing a small towel or tissues to blot your face during your session.
  7. Water and Snacks
Being a model is a tough job, so bring water and snacks to keep you energized and hydrated during your session. You will be surprised how fast you will “wilt” if you don’t!
  8. Props
Books, letterman jackets, class rings, flower crowns, school paraphernalia and vintage furniture can add to your photographs by adding a personal element to them. If you have something special that you would like to include in your photographs, it doesn’t hurt to bring it! You can easily wear a letterman jacket over one of your existing outfits to give you more variety in your photos.
  9. Mirror
At most locations, you might not have a mirror to check your outfit, hair or makeup before shooting. Have a hand held mirror ready so you can make sure you look your best before your photographer starts shooting again.

Oh, hi there!

Yep…I was THAT nerdy kid who brought 9 disposable cameras to a week-long summer camp and carried cameras in her purse because I wanted to capture every incredible moment that happened. Needless to say, I have always had a huge passion for photography! Read More…

The dancers’ talent, gorgeous styling and precis The dancers’ talent, gorgeous styling and precision always makes my shoot with Studio 413’s company a ton of fun.

I’ve worked with this studio long enough to have a clear rhythm with them in front of the camera, which makes these sessions straightforward and efficient.

For other dance studios, there’s value in photographing your dancers in their competition costumes before they compete. It gives you usable marketing material ahead of the season and a “test run” of their costumes before they hit the stage.
