We are currently living in a time where almost EVERYTHING is digital. Bank statements, online shopping, social media, and even grocery shopping is all done online. I get asked all of the time why physical sorority packets are still required and my response to that question is quite simple…not everyone has caught up with the digital age.
Guess what? Most sororities are going digital! But not all of them!
- We are currently in a time of transition where not all of the sororities have gone completely digital. Check with the alumni that are writing your letters of recommendation to see if they need a physical packet or if their sorority has gone completely digital. My sorority has gone completely digital, so it is a lot easier when all of the information (pictures, resume, transcript, etc.) are emailed to me. I send in letters of recommendation a lot sooner when I’m not having to scan in everything.
Beautiful folders and packets impress the alumni writing your letter of recommendation…not the sorority members.
- It’s true! IT’S TRUE! If you provide a beautifully put together folder to an alumni who is going to digitally submit your information directly to the sorority, guess what ends up happening to your physical packet? It ends up in the trash or the rec writer keeps it as a souvenir. THE SORORITY WILL NEVER SEE YOUR PHYSICAL PACKET IF THEY’VE TRANSITIONED TO A PAPERLESS PROCESS. If you send in a physical packet, they probably won’t even look at it because all of your information was submitted digitally.
- If you do not know the alumni who is writing your letter of recommendation and you want to impress them by spending time to put together a beautiful folder, go for it! However, know that the rec writer will also appreciate digital files so they won’t need to spend additional time scanning in all of your documents.
If you make a beautiful, well-branded packet, you do not have an advantage over the other potential new members.
- Potential new members that are involved in the sorority recruitment process tend to have a competitive mindset. Potential new members want to do whatever they can to stand out to these women as a valuable asset to their sorority. However, if you spend your time and resources on crafting a perfect looking packet, you will not have an advantage over someone else during recruitment.
- The sorority members are looking for someone that they can be friends with, not someone who can put together a perfect folder.
If you’re like me, question the process a little bit and still want to do a little extra just for personal satisfaction (let me say it again, PERSONAL satisfaction), invest your time and resources into making your DIGITAL resume looks like a million bucks. The chapters and advisors WILL see your resume, so if you want to take it up a notch from your typical resume, this is the place to do so.
***Make sure to check with the alumni for EACH sorority and inquire about their physical packet or digital packet preferences. This will save you a lot of stress and time if you know their exact requirements and preferences.
